What does it do and how does it work?

Hypnotherapy is the therapeutic use of the hypnotic trance state to access the power of the subconscious mind to make changes in a person’s life. Many of us desire change in our lives, whether it be in our behaviors and habits or in our actual physical circumstances and bodily condition, but all too often change can seem to elude us as the days pass by. Many people even feel a sense that it is something within them that keeps them from making the changes they want in their life. And very often this is the simple truth! Our subconscious minds not only guide our actions and decisions and even our perceptions, but the subconscious also governs out autonomic nervous system, and therefore much of our bodily functions as well. This means that the beliefs held in our subconscious mind can and do effect every aspect of our lives, and though these beliefs always form for valid reasons, they frequently continue to operate on an old paradigm even after our circumstances have changed, and so they can become anything from obsolete to self-destructive.

The work of the hypnotherapist then is to guide the client into a conscious access to these subconsciously held beliefs so that they can be modified, deleted or replaced. It is important to realize that “will power” cannot accomplish this aim, as the will is located in the conscious mind and therefore is unable to affect the subconscious without first somehow gaining access to this otherwise closed portion of the mind.

When negative or limiting ideas are lessened, reversed or eliminated in the subconscious mind, we begin to utilize our energy toward our goals and our greater good, instead of keeping it bound in emotionalized concepts that we bury inside. This opens the door to personal growth, greater health, achieving personal success and rediscovering the joy of life.
